Filed under: Hardware, Multimedia, iPhone, iPod touch

Last night I received an email from a friend who was irate. He's been using his iPod touch as a portable video solution with a dock and video out cable. The iPod and the cable got along famously until he updated to iPhone OS 3.0.1 OS 3.0 [sorry, there isn't a 3.0.1 for the iPod touch]. Now, the iPod refuses to recognize it. Same cable, same dock, same iPod.

We looked around and found that he's not alone. There's a thread on Apple's Discussion Boards reporting the same thing. It's affecting both the iPod touch and the iPhone. Apparently 3.0 is specifically designed to reject 3rd party cables, strictly on the premise that they fail the "Made by Apple" test. One poster on the discussion board notes that the original Apple Component AV cable and dock work fine. Sure, you could restore and downgrade, but that seems silly.

Of course, no company has a responsibility to support 3rd party devices, so my friend is out of luck. But we're sympathetic. If you're affected by this issue, all we can say is it's probably time to pony up for a cable from Apple.

PostHeaderIcon Not so fast, Chinese App Store!

Several news sources have been reporting that, at long last, the iPhone will finally make its way to China after Apple was able to strike a deal with China Unicom. However, according to CNW (English translation), the integration of the iPhone may not be so easy; in fact, the App Store, from which customers can buy supplementary applications for their iPhones, presents a rather large problem.

In China, telecommunications businesses must apply for a "value-added telecommunications business license," which certifies that the company is allowed to function in the country, and subjects it to any conditions or standards set by the government, which currently include a minimum registered capital of 10 million yuan and and established reputation to "provide users with credibility and capacity." So far, Apple has not taken any steps toward obtaining this operating license and thereby receiving the approval of the Chinese government, but not a big deal, right?

Unfortunately, the issue is not simple as a bit of paperwork. One stipulation of the license is that the government must be able to monitor the activity of the company. Apple's servers for the App Store are not in China, and so they do not fall under Chinese jurisdiction. If the servers cannot be monitored by the Chinese government to a degree of their own satisfaction, the terms of a telecommunications license will not be fulfilled.

This is not to say that the iPhone can't go to China at all -- if Apple removes the App Store option, their application is otherwise fine. There's an old wives' tale that a sort of Cro-Magnon iPhone once roamed the earth pre-App Store, and they weren't so bad. However, the availability of such a wide variety of apps is one of the main advantages of an iPhone as compared to other smart phones, and that would be a hard leg-up to lose for Apple. Combining this with the lack of Wi-Fi capability, Apple's grapple with China is likely far from over.

Thanks for the tip, David!

What I want to know is this… how did he get his iPod updated to 3.0.1? That was an iPhone only update. Something else must be wrong.

Companies may not have a responsibility to support 3rd party devices, but it's common courtesy, good customer service, and, well, just sensible, to not go out of your way to block them. Especially when the product is an A/V cable. I mean, c'mon. What did Apple do, hire a former Monster Cable exec who insists that a label on the outside somehow makes metal conduct electricity better?Seriously.

Agreed with above: there's a distinct difference between supporting a 3rd party device and actively blocking it. Apple has every right to laugh if a 3rd party cable doesn't work or somehow manages to fry your iPod or monitor, but I disagree that they should be able to actually prevent the use of it.

I was affected by this, and it sucks, frankly. Why do I have to buy a $30-40 cable when the $10 version does exactly what I need it to do? (until they blocked it of course)

I was just going to say that… however, Apple does have some regulations about their products. The $10 cables aren't authorized by Apple, as that chip probably costs somewhere between 20-30 extra bucks. I don't think Apple is wrong in cutting off access through these cables, as it directly violates their iPod accessory rule, but I think that this is only going to hurt Apple- they have had too many “lock down” issues as of late- let this one go, I says.

2 stars ↓↑reportSteveJr_Ri7SteveJr_Ri said 4:36PM on 8-31-2009

I can understand it may not have all the “features” as the Apple cable, and I'm not asking them to support it either. But what makes me mad is that the cable WORKS. If i plug it in and play video it works for all of 30seconds until the dreaded “This Accessory is not supported by this iPod”. Thats where I'm angry, not that it just won't work period. Stuff like this frustrates me and makes me think next time I go to buy a replacement for this type of device. Am I going to want something that I am going to have to dump serious $$ into or will I go with an alternative with not as many features. Unfortunately sometime the $$$ wins :(

I have a Pure-Fi Anywhere 2 from Logitech. My iPhone 3G used to place nice with it and the remote control could change songs etc. Now when I dock my phone it states “this device was not made for the iPhone” and the remote does not work.It worked before but not since the 3.0 upgrade. Maybe it is related.

I agree. I'm an early iPhone adopter and avid consumer of all things Mac and although I love my iPhone and still insist that it's the best smartphone I've ever owned, I'm becoming less and less enamored with the iPhone OS and Apple in general. So much so that I recently purchased a Nokia N800 Internet tablet running Maemo 2008 as in impulse buy ($99 refurb on Ebay!) just to see how the rest of the mobile space is evolving. It's got full multi-tasking, no ridiculous app regulations (it's all open source), two SD cards slots, USB host adapter that works with a standard USB keyboard, terminal, full FTP, Bluetooth tethering, bit torrent, Skype and a sexy OS… just wow.If only Apple were even as remotely open about things I think we'd be seeing a lot more advancement within the platform.

Have you ever heard about “externalized costs”? this is the very same thing SJ is trying to stop, i think. Shure they can sell a 500 dollars computer, shure they can sell a 10 dollars accesory, but at the end all they want to do is to compensate right every part of the line, from the conception of the product to the final consumer. It all makes sense, look at the Apple Store! you always see happy people working there. Heck! sometimes i see myself working as a geniuos guy. What kind of company spends money so you can extend your battery life a couple of more years??? none! because that means less more distant sales, isn't it? well, apple does it, and does it very well. I dont know, maybe at the end iam only an apple blinded fan or maybe iam right, either one iam pleased a company like Apple is doing this well so far…

I had a similar issue with my 1G iTouch and the mini-speaker I bought for it online. It still worked, but kept interrupting games/videos with the “accessory not supported” window. I solved it by instlling “Popup Blocker” from Cydia. It costs 99 cents and does the job. The only problem that remains is that when the speaker is attached, the iPod never falls asleep and keeps draining the battery.

Apparently 3.0 is specifically designed to reject 3rd party cables, strictly on the premise that they fail the “Made by Apple” test. Click here to read all TUAW’s iPhone coverage

PostHeaderIcon Gene Munster: iPhone on multiple U.S. carriers in 2010

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Rumors, Wireless, Odds and ends, iPhone

Gene Munster, the Piper Jaffrey senior research analyst who usually hits the nail on the head when it comes to Apple forecasts, thinks that Apple will move to multiple U.S. carriers within the next year. He believe that this will happen next summer, which has been the time when Apple has introduced new models of the iPhone.

Munster noted that having multiple carriers in a market has helped Apple to achieve greater success in terms of market penetration. He pointed to France as an example; originally, Apple inked an exclusive arrangement with Orange. When it moved to a multi-carrier deal, Apple's market share in France jumped to about the 40 percent range. In the U.S., the iPhone's market share is only in the mid-teens.

Many industry pundits expect the next iPhone carrier to be Verizon, since they are beginning a transition to a new, iPhone-compatible 4G network (LTE) in the next year. This would make the transition rather simple for Apple, since they wouldn't have to design an EV-DO iPhone, but instead just use the current hardware design.

Update: Per TUAW reader Ben C., the Verizon 4G transition is not expected to be completed until 2013. In addition, a CDMA-based iPhone would need to be deployed for Verizon. Thanks for the correction and explanation.

PostHeaderIcon Grand Theft Auto On the iPhone Will Be Wonderfully Old School [IPhone Apps]

The good news: Rockstar Games is bringing an installment of Grand Theft Auto to the iPhone. The possibly good, possibly terrible news, depending on your tastes: It's going to be a top-down affair. iPhone-owning GTA fans of various vintages, fight!

Devising a decent control scheme for a GTA3-style third-person on the iPhone sounds laughably hard, so I see the fact that GTA: Chinatown Wars will be a top-down shooter, a la the original 90s crime simulators we all fell in love with back in the late 90s, as a good thing. Plus, the DS version of this same game was pretty great, aside from the terrible graphics. The forthcoming PSP version, pictured above, looks way better, as should the iPhone's (no screens yet, oddly enough), which is due in "fall." [Rockstar Games]
