PostHeaderIcon Second look: Public Radio Tuner for iPhone

Filed under: Audio, Multimedia, Freeware, iPhone, App Store, iPod touch

American Public Radio has updated and improved its free app for listening to public radio streams on the iPhone/iPod touch. We had a look at the first version in early December, and the criticisms Megan Lavey noted in her review have been addressed.

Public Radio Tuner
[app store link] has access to more than 200 streams from stations around the country. With this 1.1 update, this version starts up faster, works better over the slower EDGE network, and you can now search for your favorite station by call letters, frequency, city, region or format.

The app now uses location services to find stations that are near you, which is great if you are traveling.

Here are some things I'd like to see in the next version. Most important would be to have stations grouped by category. As it is now you can use the search tool and input a keyword like 'jazz' to get a list of stations with that format. I'd rather see some buttons that let me get this information without typing.

Another welcome fix would be web links. Each station page has the web URL to the station, but it is not click-able. I know you'd lose the stream if you bring up Safari, but the developers could have browser access from within the app as some others have done. Even better, Apple should fix the restriction in the iPhone OS that won't allow multitasking for 3rd party programs.

A spokesperson for the Public Radio Exchange, which is behind the app, tells me a May update will include program guide information. It will also allow listeners to get on-demand content, which is a big plus. And they say they are working on integrating a web browser. Yippee!

Not all Public Radio Stations are going to be found with this app. All stations were asked to contribute, but some don't stream, and others didn't want to participate.

The new features in Public Radio Tuner are most welcome, and I expect to be using it quite a bit. Give it a try and see if it fits your needs for music and talk that goes beyond the usual commercial radio fare.

PostHeaderIcon The Week in iPhone Apps: Lil’ Jon, He Always Tells The Truth [IPhone Apps]

Just as we condemned the worst app genre last week, today we signal the pinnacle of another App Store standby, the soundboard app. There will never be a better soundboard made, ever. WHAT!?

Lil' Jon: The Soundboard: Yes, this is it. It can't go any higher. Thank you, Gabe Jacobs Productions—I'm looking the other way on the fart app you already have in the store. $1

Preview: Sway: From the makers of one of our favorite games, Touchgrind, comes Sway, which seems to indicate that the Illusion Labs folks are still innovating creative ways to control games. The premise here is monkey-barring your way around a 2-day platform environment, and it looks like a lot of fun. No release date on this yet, but it looks pretty close to finished.

Multi-Photo Email: Does exactly what the title says—lets you send more than one image per email. Much, much needed default functionality that unfortunately costs a $1 to add via third-party, but if you email a lot of photos this is really handy.

Hot or Not: Yeah, I can't believe this company is still going either. Remember what 2001 felt like by scrolling through the sad parade in line at the DMV. Give them a 1-10 rating. Get your license renewed. Go home. A day well spent. It's free.

eMees Avatar Generator: If the Wii's Miis are more PlayMobil, Emees for iPhone is more Boondock Saints. There are a couple apps like this, but Emees looks like it has enough options to make reasonably accurate portraits of your friends and celebrity contacts alike. It's $3

JetSet Airport: Airport Security is one of the best flash games I've ever played, and now it's on the iPhone. You watch people going through security, and deny those trying to bring on dangerous items (like Spray Cheese). The iPhone adds a neat location-based feature by letting you unlock special unique prizes for over 100 international airports if you play in that actual airport. Great stuff. $5

Zombie Chav Hunt: Chavs are kind of like England's version of white trash, kind of like hillbilly + Ali G + fake tans + fake Burberry. Here they have taken a further step into terribleness by turning into zombies, and you can shoot them with a variety of weapons. Looks like a good way to blow a few minutes. It's a buck.

Chop Sushi: Picture a Bejewelled-like puzzle game, but with different types of sushi. Wasabi hurts your opponent (yes it's multiplayer too), and other types do other things. Fantastic for waiting in line at Japanese restaurants.

PostHeaderIcon How to Get Emoji iPhone Emoticons For Free Without Jailbreaking [Iphone Emoji]

Jailbreak iPhone users have been able to get Emoji, the Japanese emoticons, on their phones for a while now, but you can now get it even without jailbreaking—albeit a slightly gimped version.

Japanese site iPodTouchLab found out that if you import a specially formatted vcard.vcf address book file with the proper Emojis already inside, you'll be able to type out Emojis a chunk at a time, and delete the ones you don't want. It's a gimpy way of doing it, but it's free. Instructions from WinandMac follow:

Step 1. Download the vcard.vcf here.

Step 2. Import it to your address book program. If you are using Windows, you may want to do it on iPhone directly. Send the vcard.vcf file to yourself. Open in on iPhone’s Email.app, click the vcf file and import all the contacts.

Step 3. Go into “Settings” > “General” > “Keyboard” > “Japanese Keyboard”. Enable the QWERTY keyboard.

Step 4. In notes or any other program you want. Type “emojia”, “emojii” or “emojiu” to select those :) icons.

Step 5. Happy Emoji!

If you want to enable Emoji the "correct" way, where you can pick and choose which emote you're typing one character at a time, you can actually go and download Touch Dial Emoji, an app in the App Store that enables this for $5. Or, you can just jailbreak your phone for free, and enable it yourself via a Cydia app.

And yes, anybody with the newest 2.2 firmware can view these, you just need to run through this process if you want to send them. [Win and Mac via Simonblog]
