According to Fortune, AT&T will subsidize the cost of the new, 3G iPhone by as much as $200, bringing the price within the $199 range. Apparently, a "person familiar with the strategy" claims that the provider will create this bargain bonanza for customers signing new, two-year contracts. Of course, the author of the story also says that the new phones will be available in "8-gigabit-memory and... 16-gigabit-memory" versions (for $399 and $499, respectively), so take that as you like. In addition to these discounts, the source says the new iPhone will be 2.5mm thinner than the previous iteration, although we understand that right after telling Fortune this information, the "person" burst into a cloud of rainbow-colored sparkles and went flying off into the night sky.[Thanks, Penny]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Everybody seems to think The fact that Apple is announcing a 3G iPhone next June, so now it's time to start rumormongering about something else. Fortune is reporting that, according to sources close to the story, AT & T is planning a $ 200 hit on each iPhone sold (with a 2 year contract, of course). That's right, AT & T will knock off $ 200 in the 3G iPhone, to ensure that everyone and their small children (and use all the beautiful features, the AT & T network has to offer), or iPhone two in the bag. This rumor does not seem to be absurd to me, given the realities of the mobile market. Most cell phones have gone free because the carriers make their money from the monthly fees. The only wrinkle in the story, of course, is that Apple also a reduction of funds from the monthly contracts. We will see that the impact if the AT & T plans.
