We though we'd seen it all when it came to creative device destruction -- iPod with a bullet: check, exploding laptops: check, everything in a blender: double check -- but we've never seen anything spend over an hour on the highway and survive. Yet that's exactly what Mike Beauchamp's iPhone did after he left it on his trunk and drove off from a gas station -- and the kicker is that just as he was about to run out and grab it, he watched it get run over by a semi truck. Shockingly, the unit still work perfectly, even receiving a call as Mike finally nabbed it. Obviously, it's missing a few chunks and there are some broken pixels, but the touch sensitivity is solid, and it sounds like Mike's been talking to Apple PR about using it in a promo -- how's that for random luck? Check the read link for a few more pics of the damage.

How many of you have second phones? When I'm in Tahoe, I generally carry a Nokia N95 which has buttons I can press through gloves, a good camera and video recorder, and solid battery life. This weekend, I think I'm going to use the 4GB iPhone I've kept 100% legit with the most recent firmware. I have to say, the jailbroken iPhone loaded with apps is a lot less stable than the virgin iPhone.

I'm going to Spain next week for 3GSM or mobile world congress or whatever its called. It's my first, and I hope to see a number of things, like Nokia's Touch UI and a fleet of android powered phones, but you never know. A few schools, including UC Berkeley, are running classes around programming for Android. Can't say the same about the iPhone, not until that SDK and its rules are spelled out in February. It'll also be the first time I meet Jess and Addy, which should be pretty awkward for a few minutes and then pretty cool. What's weather like in Madrid and Barcelona this time of year? I guess I have to not bring an iPhone abroad, or risk those gnarly roaming charges I always make fun of people for. Anyone going?

Today, Jess Diaz brought up an interesting idea when it comes to using digg badges on stories. Whenever we're not doing original reporting off of big stories, we should maybe help out the source we're linking to by inserting their digg badge into our page. Might be a good way to spread the link love, especially when it feels like fewer people are clicking through to the source page.

Saw that old hamburger phone circulating the blogs last week, and finally figured out why when I saw that Juno movie. I actually was supposed to see Rambo, but upon going to my local theater it had been taken over by Sundance. The guy behind the counter looks pretty annoyed when I asked if they had Rambo, and Lisa quickly pulled alongside and ordered up two tickets to Juno before I could wiggle out of the situation. I really liked it.

Off to Tahoe, have a good weekend.

solidsolid.jpgWhile getting a laptop with an SSD inside is still ridiculously expensive, it won't be that way for long. That's because the price of flash memory is plummeting, with it dropping 75% in the last 5 months alone. In fact, 1GB chipsets are selling for as low as $2.23, with 4GB chipsets going for as low as $12.30.

What's that mean for you and me? Well, it means that a, say, 32GB iPhone isn't too far off, and that the days of platter hard drives in computers are numbered. If the trend of dropping prices continues, within a couple more years they'll be nearing the low prices of HDDs we're seeing now, and we'll all enjoy faster, more reliable, more energy efficient storage in all of our devices. Until then, you're still gonna have to do what you've been doing: wait. [Yahoo via Electronista]

apple-ipod-classic300.jpgSome iPod classic owners who installed the recently released 1.1 firmware are reporting that their iPods are sending electrical pulses through the headphone jack and docking port, even when the units are turned off. The pulses, estimated to be 500mv worth of DC, may be enough to damage equipment that is plugged in.

Elsewhere, audiophiles on the Head-Fi forums are complaining that the update brought "hiss" and "static" to the classic, and others say that the firmware froze their iPods or restored them inadvertently. (Note: We have not noticed any irregularities like this after extended use with our own updated classic.)

So what's the reason behind all this? Is El Jobso trying to control our minds with hypnotic pulses again? Make us switch to the iPhone? Per usual, Apple does not have any response to the matter. If a new firmware update comes soon, well, that's probably as good a confirmation as we're ever gonna get. [The Street]
